I started my keto journey 8 years ago and believe me when I tell you I learned many things the hard way. And 8 years ago, the Ketogenic Diet wasn't as popular as it is today so it was way harder to get educated and get the needed tools to be successful.
Thankfully today, we've become more open minded and self conscious about nutrition. As far as I am concerned, the keto diet has helped me loosed all my baby fat twice, and live a healthy inspired life. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I feel more productive, sharp, on point and less hungry.
Along the I did learn some things which I thought it would be useful to share so that others may save the time and the failed attempts to be what we commonly called "Fat adapted" and live the Keto life.
As a quick reminder, ketoses is a state in which your body produces ketones to burn fat for energy and to fuel your brain. You get into ketoses by eating very low carbs (less than 20 grams/day), low or no sugar (less than 5 grams/day), moderate proteins (20%) and high fat.

Believe me, these 7 tips are going to save you time, money and the hassle of slipping away from the Keto track.
Get your Ketone level: Check to make sure you're in ketoses. You may have to make some adjustments to your diet by reducing carbs or sugar or increasing fats. Without knowing if you are indeed in ketoses you won't be able to make to adjustments and therefore, won't succeed. There are two ways to do so. The cheapest is to get keto strips. The second option, more expensive and more precise nonetheless, is to get a Keto Meter.
Clean your pantry: I know it doesn't seem like a big deal right now, but beleive me! You're gonna want that pantry cleaned of carbs and everything with more than 5 grams of carbs and 2 grams of sugar. At least that's my rule of thumbs. So that I am at peace when hard time comes, especially the first few days maybe weeks for some.
Be aware & prepare for the Keto Flu: People often complain about what we commonly called the Keto Flu. You may feel like you have the flu, you are tired, may experienced headaches and more. This is a very common state. Not to worry about. There are many quick fixes & tricks to get rid of it. Drink some broth with Himalaya pink salt and drink plenty of water.
4.Prepare your meals ahead: Especially at the beginning, try and prepare your meals in advance. Cook your beef or chicken, vegetables and whatever you feel like eating and place them in plastic container in your fridge.
That way it's ready when you need it. If you take the time to prepare, you also have the opportunity to try some recipes. You're not in a rush and have time to decide what to cook.
Last minute meal prep may cause you to fail. Especially the first few weeks. Once you get a grab on the keto diet, it will be like a second nature
5.Watch out for hidden carbs: Make sure to know your food and get your favorites in place. For instance, i was using a brand of stevia for a long time. Came to realize it actually had carbs in it. 2 grams in each little pack. Which is a LOT when you're trying to stay on a low carbs diet. I did my research and found a Sweat Leaf which has 0 carbs in it. Made a huge difference. Now I always carry a few packs with me so I never have to worry about what sweetener to use when i drink or eat out.
6.Get your starter kit: People often have the misconception that being on a ketogenic diet is expensive. It can be like any other diet. But it doesn't have to be. You can get your supplements, keto bases, powder, Brain octane oil, MCT oil, Collagen etc. These are definitely help you stay in ketoses. But you most certainly do not have to get these. You can also get coconut oil and grass fed butter from your grocery store.
7. Join the Keto Community: There is many groups and pages you can join to get support and tips from other people. Some are new and some experienced. You'll find out soon enough it's nice to have people you can ask questions to when not sure or get support from when you hit a rock. This will also enable you to find out about new low carbs products, keto friendly recipes and more. So don't be shy!
